In the main text we give a pair of   hairpins, being a result of Chopin proofreading of GE1a (→GE2); it is also FE that has identical indications. Hence Chopin returned – in a modified form – to the original idea written in AI. The abbreviated sign of GE1 is an attempt to interpret a not entirely clear notation of A; another attempt was made in GE3, ignoring the authentic proofreading of GE1a.

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

The pair of hairpins was added by Chopin in a proofreading of GE1a (→GE2). The signs are also in FE, perhaps also added at the time of proofreading. In GE3 they were removed as part of comparing the compatibility of this edition with the original handwritten base text (A).

Similarly as in analogous bars 1-2, AI has here only an accent under f2 at the beginning of bar 10. Lack of the  sign in bar 10 in A (→GE1) seems to be an inaccuracy of notation, corrected – probably by Chopin – in GE1a (→GE2GE3). After including this correction, the dynamic hairpins correspond to the scheme of analogous bars 1-2, as well as to the signs in FE and EE. In the main text we give the  hairpins written in A and  added in GE1a.

The longer hairpins in A may have concerned the renounced by Chopin (deleted in A) version where he would raise the fifth of the chord only on the 4th beat of the bar. In the main text, we give the hairpins corrected by Chopin in GE1a (→GE2). The version of GE3 is a result of a revision returning the state before the proofreading of GE1a; the version was introduced also in EE3.

b. 17-18

composition: Op. 25 No 1, Etude in A♭ major

Small notes in CDP, GE1 & EE

Small notes in bar 17 in AI & A

"Big" notes in FE & GE1a (→GE2GE3)

..

The sources differ in the size of note heads of the third semiquaver in each of the groups. In the main text, we give the version of FE, confirmed by Chopin proofreading of GE1a (→GE2GE3). The heads of normal size ("big") signalise here the appearance of an additional melodic line in the tenor voice. In the remaining sources, the voice is not distinguished (EE) or it appears only at the beginning of bar 18 (AI and A).
